What is BMI?

BMI or Body Mass Index is a metric that helps you and the health professionals understand whether you have a healthy body weight in relation to your age, gender, weight, and height. It serves as a general indicator of one’s physical well-being and is one of the easiest ways to predict any health problems that one might encounter in the near future due to their body weight. You can either calculate your BMI manually or simply go online and use a BMI calculator.

How does your BMI affect your health insurance policy premium?

BMI is one of the factors that affect the premium you pay for your health insurance policy. It is directly proportional to the premium you pay for your health insurance policy which means the higher is your Body Mass Index (BMI), the higher is the premium you need to pay for your health insurance policy. This is because any insurer who provides a health insurance policy measures your premium on how healthy you physically are and BMI is one of the most basic indicators of the same.

Your BMI indicates whether you are healthy, overweight, obese, or underweight. Using such indicators, you and the health professionals can gauge the health risks that you might be the most prone to, giving the insurer the ability to quote you the right premium for your health insurance policy.

How is BMI calculated manually?

You can either calculate your BMI online using a Body Mass Index calculator or by using the following formula if you are using the metric measuring system -

Weight (in kgs) / Height^2  (in meters).

On the other hand, if you are using the imperial measuring system to calculate your BMI, you can use the following formula -

703*Weight (in lbs)/ Height^2 (in inches).

What is a BMI calculator?

A Body Mass Index calculator is essentially an algorithm that takes one’s height, weight, age, and gender into consideration and calculates the right BMI in an instantly. This tool can be used online. The BMI calculator is an efficient tool that indicates how much body mass you have in relation to your weight and height. It not only considers the fat content in your body but also the mass in your bones and muscles. There are plenty of BMI calculators available today and one can easily access them by searching for ‘Body Mass Indicator’ on the internet search engine.

How do you use an online BMI calculator for men and women?

It is actually quite simple to use a BMI calculator if you already know your exact height and weight. If you do not know these physical attributes precisely about yourself, it is first recommended to get them measured before using a Body Mass Index calculator. To help you calculate you or anyone’s BMI using a BMI calculator for men and women, all you need to do is -

1

Select the measuring units

Choose the measuring units that you are comfortable with for your BMI calculation, i.e., the metric measuring system or the imperial measuring system.

2

Enter your weight

Input your weight in the BMI calculator in either kilograms or lbs (pound). depending on the measuring system you have chosen.

3

Enter your height

Input your height in the BMI calculator in either cm or feet/inches depending on the measuring system you have chosen.

4

Enter your age and gender

Input your age and gender into their respective fields in the BMI calculator for men and women.

5

Press ‘calculate BMI’

Once you have entered all the required information into the Body Mass Index calculator, click on the button ‘calculate BMI’. Your BMI will then be displayed on the screen instantaneously.

Understanding your BMI

Calculating your BMI using the Body Mass Index calculator or manually is only the first step, understanding it is the next. To give you more clarity, here are the categories that your physical health condition would be classified into depending on your BMI -

  • If your BMI < 18.5 -

Your physical health condition would be classified as underweight in relation to the individuals who are of the same age, gender, and height as you.

  • If your BMI is > 18.5 and < 24.9

Your physical health condition would be classified as healthy in relation to the individuals who are of the same age, gender, and height as you.

  • If your BMI is > 25 but < 29.9

Your physical health condition would be classified as overweight in relation to the individuals who are of the same age, gender, and height as you.

  • If your BMI is > 30

Your physical health condition would be classified as obese in relation to the individuals who are of the same age, gender, and height as you. Individuals whose physical health condition is categorized as underweight or obese are generally considered to be the most prone to health diseases.

What is the ideal BMI for men and women?

Body mass index is the indicator of one’s weight in relation to their height and thus the gender does not play a very vital role in determining whether you are underweight, overweight, obese, or a healthy individual. To help you understand better, here is an example - a man and a woman who both have a height of 5’7” and weigh 81kgs will both have their physical health condition categorized as overweight regardless of their gender.

Why is the premium of your health insurance policy higher if you are underweight?

Being underweight makes you prone to falling sick and thus is unhealthy and demands treatment as quickly as possible. Owing to this, the premium of the health insurance policy of an underweight individual is higher.

To help you understand better, here are a few health hazards that an underweight individual is the most susceptible to -

1

Malnutrition

Implies lack of insufficient nutrition in an individual's body.

2

Anemia and vitamin deficiency

Reduces the count of red blood cells in one’s body and exposes the individual to many other ailments as well.

3

Calcium deficiency

Also called osteoporosis. Makes the bones weak, increases the chances of incurring fractures and injuries.

4

Weaker immune system

Decreases the number of white blood cells in one's body thus exposing them to various illnesses.

5

Slower growth and development

Children who are underweight lack the required nutrition to grow and develop physically and mentally at a normal pace.

6

Inability to reproduce

Due to hormonal imbalances especially in malnourished women, they can be prone to incurring many issues with reproduction.

7

Higher chances of losing life

People who are underweight are more prone to losing their life when compared to people who have a normal BMI.

Due to the above stated and many more health hazards, the premium paid by an underweight individual for his/her health insurance policy is higher.

Why is the premium of your health insurance policy higher if you are overweight or obese?

Similar to being underweight, being overweight or obese also has its own set of problems. This increases your chances of incurring various health problems and thus also increases the premium of your health insurance policy.

To help you understand better, here are a few health hazards that an overweight or obese individual is the most susceptible to -

1

Issues with the body's blood pressure

An overweight or obese individual has a higher than average blood pressure and thus is exposed to various ailments.

2

Lesser HDL cholesterol

This cholesterol is good for the body in moderate amounts and having a lesser than required quantity of the same in one's body is undesirable.

3

Higher LDL cholesterol

This cholesterol is bad for the body and thus having it in higher amounts is also undesirable.

4

Increased chances of contracting heart disease

Overweight or obese individuals have higher amounts of triglycerides in their body which causes their arteries to thicken. This makes the flow of blood difficult and thus increases their chances of having a stroke or contracting various other heat-related illnesses.

5

Diabetes

Individuals who are overweight or obese have trouble digesting sugar and are thus more prone to having type 2 diabetes.

6

Insomnia

People who are overweight or obese often have trouble sleeping comfortably either due to insomnia or breathing problems.

7

Higher chance of losing life

Being overweight or obese increases your chances of getting certain cancers and thus increases the chances of losing life when compared to people who have a normal BMI. Due to this, the premium paid by an overweight or obese individual for his/her health insurance policy is higher.
